If you visit Virelles and look carefully at the pond, you will see a strange object floating in the water.

The wind-powered aerator which helps to prevent a build-up of algae on the surface of the water.

How it works :

A wind turbine drives an underwater propeller. This in turn:

  • oxygenates the water,

  • prevents excessive growth of algae by reducing the concentration of their main nutrients (nitrates and phosphates),

  • prevents sludge building up and clogging the surface of the water.

The device was designed by the Aérolac® company.

Advantages :

  • Does not consume any electricity

  • Easy to install and move around

  • Works well whatever the direction of the wind

  • Silent

  • Stable in the wind

  • Does not bring silt back into suspension

Project financed with support from the Electrabel Fund, managed by the King Baudouin Foundation.
